Introducing the Baojun Yep: China's Electric Mini Off-Road Car

Baojun, a sub-brand of the SAIC-GM-Wulling joint venture, has recently introduced the Baojun Yep, a compact but durable electric car. Also known as YueYe in Chinese, this mini off-roader is expected to have its official debut at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show in April. Come May, the car is set to be released in China.

Looks and Design

The Baojun Yep is a boxy-shaped, 2-door electric car with an eye-catching exterior color scheme and design. It boasts a compact size, measuring 3,381 mm long, 1,685 mm wide, and 1,721 mm high. Compared to the Suzuki Jimny, a compact gasoline-powered SUV, the Chinese electric car is up to 214 mm shorter but has the same height and width as the Jimny.

The car's square shape with a floating wheel cavity, bumper, and bunker give off an off-road vehicle vibe. On the other hand, the modern LED lighting system and the roof rack available for long journeys add a touch of sleekness and function. The rear lights, in particular, are shaped seamlessly, while the LED daytime running lights give the Baojun Yep a unique personality.

Performance and Specifications

While the manufacturer has yet to announce the official specifications, most were revealed by China's Ministry of Industry and Technology filings. The Baojun Yep has a single electric motor that generates 67 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque, enabling a top speed of 100 km/h. While it doesn't have all-wheel drive, a more powerful version with dual electric motors is set to be produced in the future.

One of the Baojun Yep's top features is its impressive operating range. The lithium iron phosphate battery has a full range of 303 km when measured using the CLTC (China) standard.

Final Thoughts

With the Wuling Mini compact electric car leading the EV market in China, the Baojun Yep family promises to attract attention from customers. While this mini off-roader may not have all the same features as a gasoline-powered SUV, it proves to hold its own amongst compact electric cars. The 2023 Shanghai Auto Show will be the perfect opportunity to see this sought-after electric vehicle in action.
