Introducing the All-Electric BMW i5: A New Era of the 5 Series

The Wait is Over: Meet the All-Electric BMW 5 Series

For six years, people have been eagerly anticipating an-electric 5 Series. BMW has finally taken the wraps off the first two trims of the electric i5, featuring advanced technology like in-car gaming, range conservation mode, and eye-activated lane changes. This marks a new milestone in BMW's lineup, as the 5 Series has remained the company’s second best-selling vehicle since its inception in 197H2: BMW's Electrification Journey

BMW started its electric journey with the i3 and has introduced other all-electric models, such as the revamped i4 sport coupe, iX SUV, and i7 sedan. However, the upcoming i5 has generated the most excitement, with recent testing images sparking more interest in the highly anticipated electric sedan.

BMW i5: eDrive40 and M Performance M60 xDrive

BMW has unveiled the i5's eDrive40 and M Performance M60 xDrive variants, both of which feature the automaker's fifth-generation eDrive technology. The i5 eDrive40 is a single-motor RWD model, while the M60 xDrive is a performance-oriented model that sits at the top of the 5 Series range.

Redefined Dimensions and Styling

The new 5 Series now boasts increased dimensions, with a length of 199.2 inches, a width of 74.8 inches, and a height of 59.6 inches. The extended wheelbase of 117.9 inches offers more interior seating space, particularly in the rear. The M60 xDrive showcases new exterior features, such as large air intakes, a grille with horizontal slats and the iconic M logo, high-gloss black side skirts and mirror caps, and 19-inch M light-alloy wheels.

M Sport Package for an Enhanced Experience

BMW offers an optional M Sport Package for all 5 Series variants, adding an illuminated kidney grill in high-gloss black, M Shadowline headlights, and a rear spoiler. Customers can also opt for red brake calipers for a more aggressive look.

Truly Modern Interior Design

The interior of the i5 features a fully digital curved display, which BMW calls "the heart of the interior redesign." This display consists of a 12.3-inch information screen behind the steering wheel and a 14.9-inch control display merged into a high-resolution unit. The electric i5 models also come standard with a new Interaction Bar, ambient lighting, and a gear selector switch in the center console.

In-Car Gaming and Entertainment

Powered by the latest generation of BMW's Operating System 8.5, the i5 offers more digital entertainment options for drivers and passengers. For the first time in the 5 Series, in-car gaming through the AirConsole platform becomes a reality. Already featuring around 20 game titles, this system allows passengers to connect their smartphones to the curved display via a QR code and use them as controllers. As a result, the BMW i5 delivers an incredible combination of performance, luxury, and entertainment.

Advanced Hands-Free Driving and Eye-Activated Lane Changes in the All-Electric BMW i5

One of the most exciting features in the upcoming i5 is the optional Driving Assistance Professional package. This includes Highway Assistant, an Advanced Driver-Assistance System (ADAS) that enables hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph where conditions and speed limits permit. However, drivers must maintain their eye on the road, as their attention is constantly monitored by interior cameras.

Although drivers are fully responsible for the vehicle even when Highway Assistant is active, this feature still offers level 2 autonomy at best. BMW's innovative eye-monitoring technology lets the i5 driver confirm a proposed hands-free lane change by merely glancing at the sideview mirror. The i5 can then carry out the lane change at speeds of up to 85 mph, as long as traffic conditions and speed limits allow.

The Electric BMW i5 Models: Specs, Pricing, and Features

Buyers can choose between the standard rear-wheel drive (RWD) i5 and the dual-motor M variant. The i5 M60 xDrive and the eDrive40 with optional M Sport package come with a "Boost" paddle on the steering wheel's left side, activating the electric BMW's full driving power for maximum acceleration. In addition, the i5’s electric sound design automatically shifts to “sport” for a more immersive driving experience.

The single motor on the electric i5 eDrive40's rear offers a peak power output of 335 hp and maximum torque of 295 lb-ft (317 lb-ft with Sport Boost or Launch Control active). The car can reach 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 120 mph. Meanwhile, the i5 M60 model's specs are impressive:

- Electric all-wheel drive system comprising two highly integrated drive units on the front and rear axles. Each unit includes an electric motor, power electronics, and transmission within a compact housing.

- The rear-wheel electric motor delivers a peak power output of 335 hp, while the front motor generates 257 hp.

- The total system torque produced by both motors is 549 lb-ft, increasing to 605 lb-ft when M Sport Boost or M Launch Control is active.

Production and Launch Details

BMW will manufacture the all-electric i5 models at Plant Dingolfing, the automaker's largest European facility, where Series 5 production originated 50 years ago. The global market launch is set to commence in October 2023, starting with the all-electric versions, followed by plug-in hybrid variants in the US in 2024. Initial pricing for the i5 models are as follows:

- i5 eDrive40: $66,800 (+ $995 destination and handling)

- i5 M60 xDrive: $84,100 (+ $995 destination and handling)

The all-electric BMW i5 lineup promises a fantastic combination of performance, luxury, and cutting-edge technology, attracting buyers who are ready to embrace a sustainable future. With features like hands-free driving and eye-activated lane changes, the i5 models are reinventing the idea of what an electric vehicle can offer.
